WEC were requested to create a high fidelity digital ‘Desktop Simulator’ which could accurately model system level behaviours whilst being accessible to a wide range of users.

 

The project

The client wanted to replicate the behaviour of a system using a digital model, with the aim that the model would assist the Product Support team in providing post-delivery support. WEC were requested to create a high fidelity digital ‘Desktop Simulator’ which could accurately model system level behaviours whilst being accessible to a wide range of users.

WEC engineers developed the digital simulator using a combination of existing (client) and new (WEC) models, replacing the previous limited MATLAB based model with a suite of Simulink models to represent the control logic between interacting systems. WEC provided:

  • A systematically inspectable model
  • A number of Graphical User Interface (GUI) panels which represented the system displays, e.g. Status and Alerts pages, linked to the system as well as additional interfaces to display and control detailed system behaviours
  • A facility to adjust ‘run speeds’ to enable the user to balance fidelity with analysis time
  • The translation of ‘ground seeking’ relay logic wiring diagrams into Boolean logic in order to generate the state of all fluid mechanical equipment including failure states
  • A specialist ‘fault injection’ mode to fail multiple items of equipment either in real time or at predetermined points during a simulation
  • An analysis of system level effects, using the model to analyse effects of multiple modifications to the vehicle platform, facilitating design updates to the original system
  • Model verification using engineering judgement based on experience with other similar vehicle platforms.
  • Close consultation with target ‘end-users’ throughout model development to ensure the model functions matched the user needs
  • A user guide for non-technical users and post development support.

Our systems engineering background enabled our team to understand the client’s needs, and build an accurate model underpinned by validated input data, and intelligent interpretation of the results. Furthermore, our platform and system expertise enabled us to not only understand end-users needs, but to develop accessible GUI panels and user guides to ensure their needs continued to be met post-project delivery.

Our specialist engineers were able to successfully replicate system behaviour via a digital model. The model enabled the product support team to provide fast and cost-effective post-delivery support, reducing reliance on expensive and time-consuming testing.
