Airbus Helicopter Auxiliary Fuel System

WEC were engaged to support the fluid mechanical and electrical aspects for the design & development of an auxiliary fuel system for a military helicopter.


The project

Guided by our accredited QMS, several meetings were held with the client to gain a clear understanding of their requirements. This established that the manufacturer sought to extend the range of the aircraft in response to an “Urgent Operational Requirement”.

A detailed work definition was then prepared, and reviewed and agreed with the client. Time between initial contact and project launch was approx. 4 weeks.

  • Given the urgency and cross discipline activities, two experienced WEC Job Leads were appointed, one leading fluid mechanical activities and the other leading electrical systems activities.
  • The project required 64 deliverables, a core team of four engineers with an additional 7 engineers providing contributions. This provided access to the skills that were needed when they were needed.
  • Much of the work was performed remote from the client and so effective communications were particularly important.
  • The status of each deliverable was tracked and reported to the client on a weekly basis, technical issues and commercial status were also discussed.
  • Meetings were held at the client’s facility or remotely as required. Minutes were produced and distributed after each meeting ensuring that actions were visible to the entire team, particularly important given the remote working.
  • The Job Leads also held regular internal status meetings with the wider WEC team ensuring that everyone understood the priorities and what was expected of them.

The resultant design met the Urgent Operational Requirement and the project was successfully completed approx. 15 months after project launch.
